The prosody of backchannels in Slovak
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper explores the prosodic realization of single affirmative cue words functioning as backchannels in cooperative task-oriented dialogues. It focuses on the comparison between four major lexical items signaling this meaning (mhm, no, uhhuh, áno) and compares the results with the realization of backchannels in a similar corpus of American English. Additionally, the entrainment properties of backchannels in terms of their similarity to the end of the preceding utterance in Slovak are examined. The results suggest that backchannels in Slovak are realized in a largely similar way to those in American English but with differences in intensity and duration when compared to acknowledgements and agreements. Slovak backchannels are also similar in slope and curvature of f0 contours to the ends of the turns preceding them.

Minor sounds of major importance - prosodic manipulation of synthetic backchannels in Swedish
Prosody plays a big role in the human speech and is used for expressing emotions and attitudes in addition to the lexical words. This study looks at the possibility to use prosody in expressing attitudes with backchannels, such as /oh/, /m/, /uhu/ etc. In the study, two monosyllabic backchannels, /a/ and /m/, were chosen, created synthetically and manipulated systematically with regards to the ...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Backchannels in American English
We examine prosodic and contextual factors characterizing the backchannel function of single affirmative words. Data is drawn from collaborative task-oriented dialogues between speakers of Standard American English. Despite high lexical variability, backchannels are prosodically well defined: they have higher pitch and intensity and greater pitch slope than affirmative words expressing other pr...

متن کاملProsody-based detection of the context of backchannel responses
Current spoken dialogue systems lack positive feedback such as backchannels, which are common in human-human conversations. To develop more natural human-computer interfaces, the investigation of backchannel-responses are indispensable. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting the precise timing for backchannel responses in Japanese and aim at incorporating such method in future spoken ...
متن کاملWhere in Dialog Space does Uh-huh Occur?
In what dialog situations and contexts do backchannels commonly occur? This paper examines this question using a newly developed notion of dialog space, defined by orthogonal, prosody-derived dimensions. Taking 3363 instances of uh-huh, found in the Switchboard corpus, we examine where in this space they tend to occur. While the results largely agree with previous descriptions and observations,...
